Anzor Barshev & Sulumbek Barshev

bastashevski-state business-exhibition view

On the 23rd of October, 2002, a group of armed military officers broke into the Barshev household in Grozny, Chechnya. Brothers Anzor Barshev, 21, and Sulumbek Barshev, 22, were forced out of the house bare-foot and undressed. They were thrown into a military transport and taken to an undisclosed location. For the next two months their mother Larisa Barsheva traveled between checkpoints, regional precincts and locations that were suspected illegal prisons. Larisa also initiated a criminal investigation into the abduction at the prosecution office, but was told not to expect results. Off the record, the investigator, who sympathized with Larisa, told her that his hands were tied and that he could not get permission to question anyone he found responsible for the abduction. The investigation has been suspended due to a lack of evidence. The whereabouts of Sulumbek and Anzor remain unknown
