On the 31st of October, 2009, a group of armed and masked soldiers stormed the Azeyev household in Staraya Sunza, Chechnya. At gunpoint, they ordered the relatives of Rizvan Azeyev to call him home. On his arrival, the men arrested Rizvan and drove him to an undisclosed location. The abduction is believed to have been part of a counterterrorism operation. Local prosecutors offered their sympathies to the family but said they do not have the power to investigate the case. Rizvan remains missing
